The Promiscuous Millennial Shopper

What is “in” today can be “out” in a week for the “Millennials”.  We all have seen their lifestyles with the hipster coffee-house visits, Instagram unboxing-stories showing off their latest kicks or uber rides to the trendiest club night. In Everything, they have the urge to seek instant gratification with a mantra shop eat sleep repeat.

They shop promiscuously, love to live in the big cities with small houses and adapt to technology which can make them claim the fame of being Bold. If you can relate to this so far, you are on the right page at the right time. We at PS interiors have curated the latest millennial decor trends and bring across the flavor of the season (knowing very well your choices will change next season since you are a millennial!).

1. Multipurpose storage did you say?

What is the point of owning anything if it cannot serve you in at least 5 different ways!

We don’t know any millennial who doesn’t own the brightly colored IKEA storage boxes and uses them as a table or as a stool. Cost effective, simple, convenient and OCD friendly, these are the must-haves to save some space and organize your collection. You can tuck them beneath your bed, in your cupboard or even your car.

Just ensure the color matches your wall paint or your phone case at least 🙂

2. Everything rose gold and marble!

We are still not over the color theme of Tania’s Tea House. (Check out my blog post of that place). It is so easy to achieve luxury and simplicity at the same time at a lower price, if you choose this combination of rose gold and marble finish accents. You can host the perfect tea parties while listening to Drake or Buddha Bar, all you need is the right lighting and comfy cushions.

Caution: this combination is a tad bit girly but who doesn’t like that?

  1. Can my cushions be more expensive than my sofa?

Hell Ya! What Millennial thinks twice before splurging on the soft, fluffy, eye-catchy cushion? Call it a throw pillow, shop stopper, unicorn, arm candy you name it but claim it. These make so much sense as we forgot what was comfort without this! Also, these don’t go out of fashion easily.

Hint: they are an investment if you ask us so don’t think twice before buying.

  1. Alexa turn on the lights. Blink!

But wait, we thought Millennials don’t like things like Edison bulb because it is stuff from the past. Erm… no such thing! Edison bulbs will make you look smart if not cool. Choose from a wide range of digital bulbs and save your money for the next date night. Also isn’t it romantic to command the lights and woo your girl?  If you don’t want Alexa or Melissa to control it, you can always opt for the motion sensor technology.

  1. Green Leafy Stuff

Succulents, cacti or anything in green is a must-have decor. Succulents have a thick, dense nature because they retain water …. like cacti. But we aren’t talking just about cacti when we’re talking about succulents. We’re talking about an array of green shades and fun textures that are alive and bring a bout of fresh air to any space of the house. We love using these to sprinkle around the house during the summer months.

  1. Who has time to paint?

Answer: Wallpapers!

The ageless discovery, this can convert any room into anything you desire and would cost you half the price and more the value. Millennials usually prefer neutral tones with bold prints which can give the small room a bigger breathing area. Sometimes just wallpaper on a single wall can do wonders. Make sure you have the eye to select the right texture, print or color.

Some stores we like to explore in Dubai

  1. Your best bet – Online (SheIn, The Bowery Company, Namshi and many more..)
  2. Dragon Market
  3. H&M decor
  4. Pylones (Dubai Mall, UAE)
  5. Ikea
  6. Virgin Megastore
  7. Urban Outfitters (not available in UAE)
  8. Forever 21
  9. Typo

So what not to shop?

  1. Leather
  2. Single purpose items
  3. Kids friendly furniture/decor (you might be on the wrong page)
  4. Plastic (because eww)
  5. Personalized items (Millenials we don’t like attachments)
  6. Intricate detailing (surely must be expensive)

Hello,

Are you bored of your current room/home/office space? Looking for a change? But not having to buy new furniture or spend a bomb? Then go on reading the below ideas:

For most of us, replacing all of your furniture room by room isn’t feasible. That doesn’t mean you can’t make simple, easy and often-inexpensive changes to rooms in your home. Here are some easy ways to change the look of any room without buying any new furniture.

Give your windows something new to wear. Ready-to-hang window treatments are easy to install and yield dramatic results. Windows can be dressed to perfectly suit your style and taste. You can go bold and graphic with geometric curtain panels, or beachy with gauzy white sheers, or minimalist with bamboo shades—the options are endless.

Place flowers with a flourish for an instant breath of fresh air in any room. Or, if you prefer, potted ferns, wreaths, and potpourri can also make a statement. The focal point of the display doesn’t have to be only the greenery— give thought to the vase, as well.

A simple area rug can dramatically change the feel of a room. Dress up with an Oriental rug, or lighten up a dark room with a light colored rug, or add colors through a funky patterned rug.

Brighten up with new lighting. Proper lighting can truly bring a room to life.  A poorly lit room looks small, dark and cramped, while a brightly lit room appears open, airy and welcoming. Strategically place a couple tall floor lamps in dark corners, Layer this lighting with lamps on side tables, or you can replace all those outdated ceiling fixtures with the stunning modern masterpieces. All this makes your room feel welcoming and cozy.

One word: Paint. “Paint it” is the most common suggestion you’ll hear to update a room. It seems obvious but a clean coat of paint can take a room from drab to fab. Consider adding a punch of color on an accent wall, or just touch up your trim with a clean coat of white paint. If your home already has a fresh coat of paint, then look to other things that could use a touch-up.  Maybe paint your ceiling a cool blue, or bring new life to an outdated piece of furniture with a new coat of paint. A deep clean and a new coat of paint can go a long way when it comes to revamping our rooms without major renovations.

Install decorative display shelves. You’ll solve storage and decorating issues at the same time. If you collect shells, matchbooks, or family photos, don’t hide them away. Give each their own space to shine, and give your room a new vibe in the process. Mirrors when placed opposite windows reflect light into the room and make the room seem more open.

Wallpaper an accent wall. Consider covering the main wall of your bedroom with a peaceful pattern, or consider a living room update by covering one wall with a funky geometric patterned paper.

Last but not the least. Add colorful cushions. Cushions are significant decorating accessories that make your space look stylish and versatile and are light on your budget of home décor. If you lead a very casual/informal lifestyle, funky/jazzy designs suit you the best. Then create a good mix of colorful and decorative cushions in unusual shapes and create a delightful atmosphere.

Hope these ideas help you in bringing a little change in your home or space.

xoxo

Hello,

Here’s something new I am starting on my Blog where I will be sharing some Before & After images of the rooms or houses I have completed as part of my Interior Design projects.

A really fun styling job I have completed recently was to transform a boring guest bedroom into a Nursery room. The room was for a 5-month old Boy, so I wanted to design a room that was a bit trendy and also something he can grow up in first few years.

The bedroom as it stood was filled with king size bedroom set and random furniture pieces, so I needed to buy everything new and for a kid-friendly room. This included a crib, bed for his nanny, mattresses, bedding, lights and window treatments. To achieve this, I sourced everything for the room from Pottery Barn and Home center. Pottery Barn kids store is the perfect place to find everything you need for kids bedroom.

So this was how the room started out. Below are the images of BEFORE guest bedroom:

When designing the room I put together a color palette of white, navy blue, yellow and grey. The colors, although not obviously ‘childlike’, had a fun, youthful but modern connotation when combined. Below is the initial mood board I created for the design concept.  I chose grey wallpapers with borders for walls, so this color provided the base, while the grey works well with yellow and can be used to balance out this color so it wasn’t overpowering. I also did an accent wall right behind the crib with navy blue paint and white decal stickers of tree branches and birds.

I decided to go with White furniture because that automatically makes your room look neat and not bulky with a lot of furniture pieces. The opposite wall of the crib was the wall of storage units. As a growing kid there we many kinds of stuff and toys to be stored somewhere neatly. I also wanted to bring the birds from the decal sticker to the opposite wall so bought these flying bird decor from Pottery Barn.

The existing ceiling was very interesting with round design but had dark brown wooden borders which did not match my theme. So I decided to paint them white and put up a cloud patterned wallpaper on the round part making it look like the sky.

I also added a comfortable long armchair for the mother to relax while putting the baby off to sleep with yellow cushions and cushion with the personalized name of the baby.

Curtains were fairly simple with light grey chiffon and yellow velvet main giving it a very soft look. White pelmet box just finished the look of the window.

In addition to the room, I also customized a wooden cabinet in navy blue color under the wash basin in the attached toilet and accessorized with yellow decor flowers and candles.

So this was the final look! Let me know what you guys think? I will be sharing more on this segment of my blog.

Cheers,

xoxo

Hello Everyone,

Looking for a quick blow dry for your hair or a trendy braid and updos. Then go on and read this blog. Today I am writing about my experience in BE BAR Blow Dry Bar. This salon is located at Jumeirah Beach road. And I think it has the cutest entrance door. There is no way you cannot spot the Turquoise door while you drive down. Have a look at the below picture.

As soon as you enter the door, you will see a beautiful cozy corner on your right-hand side and stairs to go up to the salon and the reception. The salon is decorated throughout with the signature colors of white and turquoise, is stunning, with plenty of natural light and contemporary interiors. The layout of the salon is unique since they have the bar-style round stations with mirrors where the clients are seated around during their services. One of the walls is this old vintage looking brick wall with light airy curtains and 3-side mirror. I love the way they put up their inspiring taglines on all the walls. One of which was my favorite “Be You. Shine True.”

About the salon, Be Bar is Dubai’s premier hair styling salon specializing in a range of blow-dry styles, updos, braids, intensive scalp and hair treatments and nails. This salon does not offer any haircut or hair color. They have a very interesting menu for their Blow dry services with lots of inspirational styles shown on an iPad. After seeing all their styles, I opted for BE BEACHY, which is, messy waves giving off a relaxed and beachy vibe. Before the stylist could start my service, she gave me a beverage menu, which had amazing options. While sipping my coffee the stylist very calmly blow-dried my hair in sections before curling with an iron and pinning each curl close to my head to cool. She then brushes out the curls and pins them into place before liberally spritzing with hairspray.

The end result was just so surprising. I never liked curls on my hair since I have short hair but this was just so shocking. The beachy waves looked so naturally done and I kid you not the blow dry stayed for more than 2 days.

Pros

  • The staff was very friendly and experienced.
  • They use good products and heat protection spray before.
  • The salon has a relaxing vibe and it’s a pleasant place to be.
  • They sell some amazing products from Bando.

Cons

  • There’s nothing I did not love about this salon.

Location: Be Bar, Villa 594, Jumeirah Beach Road, Umm Suqeim 1 (04 321 2348).

There are no hard and fast laws for organizing or creating space for your home office. But there are some rough principles that guide us to ensure a great result every time. Consider this a foundation for developing your own quirky, creative, rule-breaking intuition. Here are top 3 tips for creating an attractive and practical workspace.

1. Location and Lighting.

Location and adequate amount of natural light or artificial lighting are very important for this space. You’ll likely spend many hours in your home office; so don’t stuff yourself in a tiny space where there is no view or window. Spaces filled with light help reduce stress by reminding us of the world outside. An office flooded by natural light and constructed from carefully chosen details and natural colors will reset your minds every time you look up from the computer screen.

2. Invest in a great chair.

A comfortable office chair is of utmost importance for those spending a lot of time at a desk, so make sure you choose one that is both supporting and aesthetically pleasing.

3. Choose homey accessories.

Decorating your home office with personal items, jovial colors and flowers bring a feeling of comfort that you rarely get outside the home. Accessories like a pretty mug for a pencil holder, trendy notepads, and sticky notes, and a decorative wastebasket can fill up the space giving it a more special touch. Wrap your bulletin board in a gorgeous fabric, hang inspirational prints and art on the walls, or showcase decorative greenery that exudes a sense of pure joy. Also, Organization is key to starting every workday fresh and helps you manage your time. Using baskets, boxes and colorful organizers for files and documents could not only save you valuable time but also create the order you need.

Whatever type of work you do, it’s easy to combine professionalism and elegant details in your home office design. I hope these home office ideas have given you some inspiration to get you started!
